Composite Door Cost and Front Door Prices Explained
Replacing a front door is a smaller job than a whole set of windows, but the quotes can still vary a lot. A plain uPVC back door and a composite front door with side panels and decorative glass are very different products. This guide sets out what drives the cost of composite, uPVC and aluminium doors, without quoting figures, so you can understand a quote and decide where your budget is best spent.

Door material
Composite doors have a thicker, layered slab with an insulating core and moulded skin, which usually places them above a standard uPVC panel door in price. uPVC doors are generally the more economical option and are common as back doors to kitchens and utility rooms. Aluminium entrance doors are sleek and strong and tend to sit towards the higher end. Each material can suit a home; the question is which features you actually need.
Style, colour and glazing
Simple slab designs use less glass and fewer parts than a cottage or contemporary style with several glazed panels. Dual colour, where the outside and inside are different shades, can add to the cost. Decorative, obscure or bevelled glass costs more than plain panes. A stable door, split horizontally so the top can open on its own, needs extra hinges and locking and is priced accordingly.
Frames, side panels and thresholds
Many entrances have more than the door itself. Side panels and toplights increase the size of the frame and the amount of glass. The threshold also matters: a low threshold for level access or a specific step detail can change the specification. If the existing sill or brickwork needs making good after the old frame comes out, that time is part of the job too.
Locks and hardware
Multipoint locks are standard on most modern doors, but cylinders, handles, letter plates, knockers, spyholes and door chains vary in quality and finish. Higher-grade cylinders and matching furniture in a chosen colour can add to the cost. Ask which hardware is included so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Back doors and patio doors
Back door cost is driven by the same things as a front door, but owners often choose simpler styles with more glass to bring light into a kitchen. If you are replacing a wider opening to the garden, patio doors prices depend on the width, number of panels, frame material and glass. Our patio doors page covers that type of door in detail.
Comparing front door quotes
A front door replacement quote should list the door material and style, colours, glass, hardware, frame and any side panels, plus removal of the old door and making good. If one quote looks much lower, check whether it includes the same items. A survey ensures the door is made to fit your opening exactly.
Timing can matter as well. Doors are usually made to order once the survey measurements are confirmed, so allow for manufacturing time between accepting a quote and the fitting day. On the day itself, a single door replacement is usually a contained job, though your home will be open while the old frame is out, so it helps to plan around that.

How much does a composite door cost?
It depends on the style, colour, glazing, hardware and whether side panels or a toplight are included. We give a written quote after measuring your opening.
Is a uPVC door cheaper than a composite door?
Generally a uPVC panel door is the more economical choice, while a composite door costs more for its thicker layered construction. Both can be specified with good locks and seals.
Does a stable door cost more?
Yes, usually. A stable door has two separately opening leaves, so it needs extra hinges and locking compared with a standard single-leaf door.
Can I replace just the door and keep the frame?
Sometimes, if the existing frame is sound and a suitable leaf can be made to fit. In many cases replacing the door and frame together gives a better seal and finish.
