uPVC Door Handle Replacement
On a uPVC door the handle does more than open the latch. Lifting it drives the multipoint lock that secures the door along its edge, so a tired handle can affect both convenience and security. Sean Cardwell Windows replaces uPVC door handles on front, back and side doors from our Weston-super-Mare base, checking the door and lock at the same time so the new handle is not straining against an older fault.

Why a uPVC door handle goes loose
A uPVC door handle loose on its fixings is one of the most common complaints. The bolts that pass through the door can work slack with daily use, or the threads can strip. Inside the handle a return spring holds the lever level; when that spring weakens or breaks, the handle droops and no longer springs back. Handles can also crack at the lever, especially on doors that are slammed or pulled hard to close.
Tightening the fixings may be enough for a while, but if the handle droops or the backplate has cracked, replacement is normally the better answer.
Choosing the right replacement
uPVC door handles come in different lengths, screw centres and lever styles, and the distance between the spindle and the keyhole must match the lock. A lever-lever pair works one way, while a lever-pad set suits doors that should not open from outside without a key. We measure the existing handle and lock so the new set lines up properly, and can suggest finishes that suit the door.
It is also worth thinking about security. Some handles include a shield that covers part of the cylinder, which pairs well with a better cylinder. Our anti snap lock upgrades page explains that side of things.
When the problem is the lock, not the handle
If the handle is firm but will not lift, or lifts without throwing the hooks and rollers, the fault is often inside the lock or due to a door that has dropped out of line. Replacing the handle would not cure either. In those cases our Lock-Repairs page covers multipoint lock and gearbox work, and the dropped door and not locking page explains alignment faults. We will tell you which applies before fitting anything.
Looking after your new handles
A replacement handle lasts longest when the door is closed gently rather than slammed, and when the lock is engaged by lifting the lever fully before turning the key. Avoid hanging bags or coats from the lever, as the weight strains the return spring. A wipe with a soft damp cloth keeps the finish clean; harsh cleaners can mark chrome and coloured coatings. If the handle starts to feel loose again, tighten the screws early before the threads wear.
Back doors and side doors
Back and side doors to kitchens or utility rooms often get more daily use than the front entrance, so their handles tend to wear first. They are also more likely to be opened with wet or greasy hands. A firm lever with a good return spring makes a real difference here.
What happens at the visit
We check how the door closes, how the handle moves with the door open and shut, and whether the lock throws freely. If a handle is all that is needed, the old one is removed and the new set fitted and tested. If we find a deeper issue we explain the options so you can decide. Start by describing the fault and adding a photo through the quote form.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my uPVC door handle droop?
The return spring inside the handle has usually weakened or broken. A replacement handle with a sound spring restores the level position.
Can I tighten a loose uPVC door handle myself?
Often you can tighten the fixing screws on the inside. If the threads are stripped or the handle still wobbles, it is time to replace it.
Do I need lever-lever or lever-pad handles?
Lever-lever suits doors that should open from both sides with the handle. Lever-pad suits front doors that need a key to open from outside.
Will a new handle fix a door that won't lock?
Only if the old handle was the fault. If the lock or door alignment is the problem, those need sorting first.
